On a straight steep slide, bigger people go faster. That's why the lifeguard waits for the person in front to finish before you go.Translucent RTM bands and LED rings (WhiteWater AquaLucent, Polin natural-light effects, Wiegand Wie-Glow) turned the enclosed slide from a black pipe into a light show. Bowls added music and strobes (Disco H2O, 2005); Slideboarding added a game; VR added a headset.

On slides with deeper water, everyone ends up going about the same speed as the water, so nobody catches anybody up. Designers test all this on a computer before the slide is built.
